Congratulations, to Nikhil Patel, student at Sanford Middle, for being selected as a finalist in the first ever Broadcam MASTERS™ (Math, Applied Science, Technology, and Engineering for Rising Stars) competition. Under the direction of his teacher, Mrs. Heidi Broksas-Weitnauer, Mr. Patel won this prestigious accolade for designing and testing a one of a kind Science Fair project titled, “DEFROST: Designing an Environmentally Friendly Recycler of the Sun's Thermal Energy.”
The Broadcom MASTERS finalists were selected by a panel of distinguished scientists and engineers from among 1,476 applicants located in 45 states, Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico. These finalists come from middle schools across the United States. As one of these finalists, Mr. Patel will receive an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, DC, in October to showcase his science fair project and compete in a four-day STEM competition for awards and prizes. He also has an opportunity to win the top education award of $25,000.

Congratulations to all the Sanford Middle School Students that presented their Science Fair projects at the Seminole County Regional Science, Math & Engineering Fair held on Saturday, February 20th at the Seminole Towne Center Mall.
Nirva Vassa 1st Place Chemistry; Niharika Maity 2nd Place Mathematics; Max Schuman 2nd Place Environmental Management; Nathaniel Shepard 2nd Place Environmental Mangement; Joshua Sacks 2nd Place Evironmental Sciences; David Jones 3rd Place Physics and Astronomy;Jeffrey Taylor 3rd Place Mathematics; Logan Saucer 3rd Place Plant Sciences;
Students, who attended the Kennedy Space Center field trip on Feb. 20, were able to meet Astronaut John Blaha. He spoke with them about what it was like to be an astronaut, what a shuttle launch feels like, and talked about what it was like to live on Space Station Mir for four months. He discussed experiments he worked on while living on the space station and their importance in setting up a moon colony or Mars colony in the future.
Students were also able to design and shoot off a rocket made of balloons, straws, tape and paper clips. Students whose rockets went the highest received a prize.
Students were able to tour KSC and experience all that it had to offer. Those who went on the tour to the launch pad gantry were able to see the Shuttle Discovery as it was preparing for its March 15th launch.
