SMS Takes Second Place in the State MathCounts Competition

With Sam Li taking 7th place and Jimmy Qin taking 4th place, the Sanford Middle School MathCounts team took 2nd place in the state competition held in Orlando on March 15th. With his top four position, Jimmy Qin will now represent Sanford Middle School at the National Competition in Washington D.C. in April. For the fourth year in a row, SMS retained its position as the #1 middle school in central Florida. |

SMS Wins the Central Florida Chapter MathCounts Competition

Sanford Middle has done it again! For the fourth year in a row, SMS students have won the Central Florida Chapter MathCounts competition!! Leading the way for Sanford were Jimmy Qin who won the written part of the competition (and finished 2nd overall) and Sam Li who claimed the Central Florida top mathlete award after winning the Count Down Round and taking first place. Overall Sanford had 7 students placing in the top 13. Besides taking first and second, Aaron Zhang placed fourth, Sabrina fan, eighth, Zach Ip, ninth, Tim Vu eleventh and Raveena Patel, thirteenth. Next up for this outstanding team will be the state competition to be held at the DoubleTree Inn at the Entrance to Universal Studios on Friday March 15th. Parents are welcome to attend starting at 1:15 when the Ciphering round will begin.

SMS Takes 1st Place at Sun Coast Community High School Regional Competition

The SMS Geometry and Algebra Mu Alpha Theta teams won again at the Sun Coast Community High School regional competition on February 2nd. After starting our day at 4:30 A.M. and driving for nearly 3 hours to reach the competition, both teams dominated their divisions taking first place by nearly 100 points in Algebra I and nearly 200 points in Geometry! Our individual winners in Algebra I were Jordan Nguyen who took first place, Jonathan Sepulveda third, Zach Ip, fifth, Adrian De Guzman seventh, Jason Ramon, 9th, Karthik Sreeram 13th and James Soto, 15th. Individual winners in Geometry included Sam Li who took first place, Raveena Patel 2nd, Sabrina Fan 3rd and Keven Zhai fifth. Our next competition will be February 16th in Tampa Bay.

Geometry Team Takes First Place

see additional photos below: Sanford Middle School excelled once again in Mu Alpha Theta math competition. At Lake Mary, our Geometry team one finished first nearly 200 points ahead of the second place team, our Geometry team 2! The Algebra I team finished 2nd, missing first place by only one point, and the Algebra II team (consisting of only two students) finished 3rd in that division. Top finishers for SMS in Geometry included Ravena Patel, first place, Tara Nibhanapudy in second, Sam Li in fourth, Meera Sundar in 5th, Sabrina Fan in 6th, Timothy Vu in 8th, Niyati Shah in 9th, and Aaron Zhang in 12th. In Algebra I, Zech Ip finished in first place, Jordan Nguyen in 3rd, Jonathan Sepulvada in 5th, and Jason Raman in 13th. Jimmy Qin finished in 3rd place in the Algebra II division.
