SMS Students Make

All County Band

Sanford Middle School had eight students selected for All County Band honors based on their auditions this past Tuesday night at Tuskawilla Middle School. Johl Kapil, Megan Flynn, and Micah Bermudez all eighth grade flute players. Brandon Stacy eighth grade clarinet player. Catriona Arrell and Varun Naga eighth grade alto sax players. Jonathan DeStefano, eighth grade, and Dylan Woodcum, seventh grade, made the band on percussion. Congratulations to all of these students who worked extremely hard to attain this honor. Also, congratulations to our band directors Mr. Reinecke and Ms. Kinion.

Congratulation Emily Erdman

2013 All State Orchestra 


We would like to congratulate Emily Erdman for making the 2013 All State Orchestra. Emily has been a member of the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra for 6 seasons and is a current member of the Advanced Women's Choir at SMS. This will be her second year to participate in the All State Orchestra.  The Florida All-State Middle School Band and Orchestra consist of the state’s finest student musicians in grades 7 and 8. Several hundred students audition for this prestigious ensemble every September but only the top students make it into the ensemble. Students will rehearse with a highly esteemed Band or Orchestra director during the first week of January concluding with a performance at the Florida Music Educator’s Convention in Tampa.

Congratulations Brandon Stacy

2013 All State Band


We would like to congratulate Brandon Stacy for making the 2013 All State Band. Brandon started playing Clarinet in the sixth grade in the SMS Beginning Band. Brandon is an eighth grader who has been playing Clarinet for three years and currently sits first chair in the SMS Symphonic Band. The Florida All-State Middle School Band and Orchestra consist of the state’s finest student musicians in grades 7 and 8. Several hundred students audition for this prestigious ensemble every September but only 130 make it into the ensemble. Students will rehearse with a highly esteemed Band or Orchestra director during the first week of January concluding with a performance at the Florida Music Educator’s State Convention in Tampa.

Malavika Kannan in

National Academic Contest


Malavika Kannan, a 6th grader in SMS, was invited to participate in national finals of the Science Bee organized by the North South Foundation (NSF). The NSF is a charitable organization that organizes various academic bee contests for school children across the USA, while supporting educational scholarships in India. This year’s contest was held at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor on August 20. About 100 contestants from across the country, chosen based on their performance in regional contests from earlier this year, participated in the Science Bee, fending off questions on Newton’s laws and the Doppler affect. Malavika enjoyed participating in the contest and visiting the Ann Arbor campus.

2009 Red Ribbon Week Contest Winners

The State Attorney and Sheriff's Office sponsors the Red Ribbon Week poster and essay contest for students in 5th - 8th grades. The winning posters are used in the production of the 2009 Drug Free Calendar. The awards ceremony will be held Thursday, December 3rd at Winter Springs High School. Sanford Middle School's Kaitlynn Dyess 8th grade 2nd place winner will be featured in the 2010 calendar.Sanford Middle School had 4 Essay Contest Winners, Jack Oliver-Phillips 6th grade 3rd place, Craig Stuart 7th grade 3rd place, Avina Vyas 7th grade 2nd place and Shelby Buchanan 7th grade 1st place.


Sanford Seminole Art Show

This past weekend (Feb.28th & March 1st) at the Sanford Seminole Art Show one of our students, Elizabeth Hertko received the People's Choice Award. Congratulations Liz!!

Reflections Winners

Almost 2,500 students from 43 Seminole County schools participated in Reflections, the National PTA’s annual arts program. Students submitted entries in one or more of six arts areas (Visual Arts; Photography; Literature; Musical Composition; Dance Choreography; and Film Production) inspired by the theme “WOW!” Sanford Middle School has more winners then ever before.  This is WOW!!! Over 550 entries were judged at the county level, and the three winners in each category/grade division will go on to compete at State. Thanks to all the students who participated in Reflections this year, and congratulations to the winners and the Honorable Mention award winners.

The following Sanford students are the Seminole County winners, and their work will go on to compete at the State level. Wish them luck.

Teen Read Fest Competition

The Teen Read Fest was held November 6th at 7:00 PM at the Seminole County Board of County Commissioners Chambers in Sanford. Nathaniel Shepherd's poem "Home" and Sally Compton's poem "Piano" were selected as winning poems in the competition.
